United States and Malta Come Together to Celebrate America’s Birthday

On Tuesday, June 27, U.S. Ambassador Constance Milstein welcomed His Excellency George Vella, President of Malta and Mrs. Miriam Vella; Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne; Maltese dignitaries; diplomatic representatives; and friends of the U.S. Embassy at a celebration to mark the 247^th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America.

The theme of this year’s event focused on American country and western traditions, including live performances of classic American country songs, line dancing, and the opportunity to try classic Stetson hats and samples of cuisine from Texas, Tennessee, and parts of the American south.  Guests wore casual denim attire, a favorite manner of dress in the United States since the 1800s, to honor the work ethic, ingenuity, and style of those who came before us, and to demonstrate a fashion that defies borders and unites people across the globe.

In her remarks, Ambassador Milstein highlighted the shared values, warm friendship, and excellent bilateral relationship between the United States and Malta.  Ambassador Milstein said, “On this Independence Day, we have the opportunity to show the world the strength of the ties between our two countries.  The United States and Malta, as sovereign states, stand together to protect and strengthen the democratic ideals of human rights, peace, self-determination, and freedom to peacefully express opinions.”

In his speech, the President of Malta, His Excellency George Vella, expressed appreciation for the bilateral successes of the past year and for the commitment of the U.S. and Maltese governments to meet today’s global challenges.  His Excellency George Vella and Mrs. Vella joined Ambassador Milstein, Embassy staff, and guests in toasting the historic friendship between the United States and Malta.

The memorable evening celebration reflected the close relationship and warm friendship between Malta and the United States, as well as our cooperation in meeting global challenges, and the democratic values that unite the American and Maltese people.
