To celebrate Earth Day, volunteers from the U.S. Embassy, Malta National Aquarium, Maltaqua Dive School, Sharklab Malta, Birdlife Malta, Zibel Malta and the Mellieha Local Council, together with many Maltese and international volunteers, cleaned up trash on the beach and surrounding areas at the Natura 2000 site in Mistra on Thursday, May 11.
Commenting on the activity, Ambassador Hill reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to ocean stewardship. She announced that the U.S. Embassy and the Malta National Aquarium will host an exhibition, “Tackling Plastic Pollution of the Ocean,” in conjunction with the Our Ocean conference being held in Malta in October.
Ambassador Hill said, “Plastic pollution is a serious threat to our oceans, putting fragile ecosystems, marine life, economic livelihoods, and human health at risk. The interactive exhibition will raise awareness about plastics pollution, describe the impacts of micro-plastics on the ocean environment, and provide examples of actions individuals can take at home.”
