On October 16, 2017, Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered in a heinous attack because she took risks to promote greater transparency and speak uncomfortable truths to those in power.
Today, five years after the murder of Ms. Caruana Galizia, even as we welcome recent developments in the process of justice, we reiterate our condemnation of those who would employ violence to silence dissenting voices. The United States stands by Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family, the media, civil society, and Maltese authorities committed to implementing the recommendations of the Public Inquiry. We reiterate the importance of transparency and openness as the key ingredients to build trust and safeguard good governance.
